Smiles all around

Look who showed up at our door yesterday!
Several within the family knew of this surprise and everyone kept the secret - Naphtali even called me from the road!  She said she was running errands - Trader Joe's to be exact.  What she didn't tell me was that the Trader Joe's was in Des Moines!  I'm still smiling!

observations

All the catching up is done.  I am officially caught up and have only my current workload for classes!  The travel was great, but it does get complicated when juggling deadlines.
Registration for spring semester started this week.

Thanksgiving is next week.

Charlie won't step on manhole covers when we walk.

I was hoping to see meteoroids this morning.  I didn't.

Thanksgiving is next week.

Family wedding in October 2011.

I've started wearing long pants to walk to the gym in the mornings.  CCCCold at 5:00.

Also ccccold at bedtime - I've added another layer of light-ish blankets.

Thanksgiving is next week.

Yoga pants and hoodies. Turtlenecks.

I need color.

I need stronger light.

Dishwashers are wonderful!  Or maybe I'm just in that honeymoon stage - but why has it taken me 5 years to discover the delights of dishwashers!?

For whatever reason, I started using my dishwasher for storage when we moved into this house 5 years ago During a recent marathon weekend of kitchen work I was looking for options.  General strike, paper plates, something!  While we were at Jacob and Kate's, watching them load their dishwasher,  I had the classic enlightened moment - I have a dishwasher!  On our return home, school work and laundry shared that first day's busyness with finding a spot for the things stashed in my dishwasher. If I move this stuff here, then that stuff has to go.... Where is the soap the previous owner left behind?  (honestly, who keeps 1/2 a bottle of cascade for 5 years?)  But there it was...
For my birthday, Tim found a pretty little red-bound French English dictionary at the Goodwill.  I keep it at my desk and you'd be surprised how many times I've used it!

inspiration!!

i think the trick to most blog entries is waiting for inspiration. what do i have to say that is of any interest to anyone!? really!!

i feel like i've been on the run for the past week or so and it's not over yet. appointments, meetings, errands, extras, in addition to the normal routines have found me up early, busy late and just plain on the go in between!! (i still have to do my nails tonight!!)

thankfully the weather has been cooperative - though that is supposed to change thursday - so i've been wearing my tweed jacket a lot these days. (we're obviously taking the scenic route to reach whatever point i have in mind) if i leave the house early i want to wear gloves and a scarf which i'll discard as the day's weather progresses. i don't, however, want to snip open the pockets on my jacket. i also don't want to just drop my gloves in the car, bury them in my purse...
this morning inspiration struck!!!!
at some point in time i snagged this from my mother. i'd never seen anything like it and had to ask what it was. it was/is a glove thingie!! back in the day when gloves were de rigueur you would attach it to your purse handle and fasten your gloves to keep track of them while you're lunching, for exapmle.
never one to pass up the "you never know" factor i took it home where it sat in my shadowbox, unused but lovely to look at, for quite some time. it has decorative etching, a cute clasp and today it has a purpose again!!

thank you

at some point i introduced my friend, marg, and she in turn her daughter, megan, to a delightful site called parisbreakfasts (you're welcome to visit, too.) carol gillot does an amazing job of capturing small moments from daily life in paris in which macarons play a big part.
megan (bless her heart) was recently in las vegas when she ran across a bakery with a display of macarons!! and she (very thoughtfully) brought some back for us to enjoy.
when delivered to my house did I immediately think of my camera and the amazing photo op i'd just been handed???
mais, non!! i simply ate it.

it wasn't until the last bite was 1/2 way to my mouth that i thought i should chronicle the

appearance of a real live macaron in my humble abode, giving megan credit for her thoughtful generosity. sad but true.
it was delish!! thanks, megan!!

a layered day

today was one of those layered days and i'm not comparing it to the yummy triple layer ginger angel food with lemon and toasted coconut cake that i served to the garden club this afternoon.....
we started our day with an automated phone call with a severe weather warning at 1:10 am. the program sounds soooo good on paper and my friend and i both registered. then the calls actually began. i have since gone back to the site to un-register, a process they say can take 4-6 weeks. i'll probably try again.
charlie and i took a walk.
i squeezed my lemons, made my goop, cut and assembled the cake (baked last night), did some last minute cleaning, ran to the grocery store, stopped to price a bracelet that had been calling out to me since my sister's visit, learned that it had been calling in vain, tried on my new boots (again), added the boot box to the garbage, etc etc etc.
i did'nt have time to check my email.
garden club happened, the cake was a hit, the dishes were cleared off and everyone in the business of leaving when i received a compliment on my hair. and for the first time ever in local ears i admitted that i was preparing for a trip this fall and needed to do my hair sans appliances and so had been practicing with a new look. (you know how a haircut looks best after about 2 weeks?? looks perfect for about 2 days?? then is suddenly, overnight too long?? in the last few days i've had several compliments on this particular cut which i got at the beginning of july.) paris. in november. with my sister. for two weeks.
i checked my email.
paris is off. i reread several times hoping i had somehow misread but no it was there everytime. paris isn't going to happen.
one of the responsibilities of a rational adult is having to admit in the face of disappointing news that this is not the worst thing to happen to me today or any other day. so let's just say i was bummed. yes, let's just say that.
in the discussion of the day's events with tim he did ask if i would continue to wear my hair like this 'cuz he likes it. and he finally understood the lowlights transitioning to gray concept and he's on board with that! (i've always hated the time and expense, the bondage, of trying to stay blonde and was planning -again with an eye toward paris- to just be done with it!! (i am at heart a low maintenance kind of gal and find myself surrounded with jars and tubes and formulas that i never would have forseen and do limit. but my advice is moisturize!! every morning. every night. every chance. and watch the sun. really.)
like i said - certainly not a candidate for 'worstdayofmylife' status.
my husband likes my hair. i have a home. a good dog. we're both healthy and working. (tim and i not charlie and me) the boots will look great where ever i wear them. and my itsy-bitsy, half price, half alive hydrangea bloomed.
bonne mercredi!!

gomer pyle

surprise! surprise! surprise!
i honestly don't remember planting crocus. at all. no bells are ringing here.
as more and more green is poking through my as-yet-untouched winter debris i'm realizing that i did a very poor job of 'recording' my flower beds last season.
in previous years new plants/placements were documented with photos and a chart. oh well - i guess it's going to be a surprise season ......
you can see that i marked these bulbs with bamboo skewers - and while i'm pretty sure i planted daffodils there only time will tell.

i have no recollection of adding tulips to this particular bed but here it is. the leaves in front of it have me guessing, as well.
they're awfully narrow for tulip leaves. i know they're not iris. another surprise in the making.
peonies and iris are about 6 inches tall. columbine is filling out. yarrow starting to take shape. if i could just get a good work day out there!
